Pick up surplus food from Food Donors in our community (grocers, restaurants, etc.) and deliver it directly to local Receiving Agencies (community kitchens, food pantries, etc.) that feed our hungry neighbors. In your own vehicle and on your own time, it typically takes only about 30 minutes to complete this incredibly rewarding and essential mission.
To participate, register on the Food Rescue website (see link below), and search for available rescues. The process takes 5-10 minutes and once you are set up, you can begin!
There is built in flexibility – you can plan ahead or check out what last minute rescues are available - whatever works best for your schedule! Either way, the experience will be fulfilling as you and your daughter will be playing a role together in getting fresh food to our food insecure neighbors.
What is different about this SASO opportunity? You will not sign up on the SASO Girls site but sign up through the Food Rescue website. Once you pick up the rescue, you must take a pic/screenshot of the food in the car and include with your email to firstname.lastname@example.org to record participation in the event. Do not forget to provide your names and date of service with the picture of the food rescue and a brief description of the event (i.e. Food Rescue Service Complete 7/9/20- picked up food at Trader Joes and delivered it to Salvation Army in Bridgeport, Mom and Daughters full name, picture attached)
Please take advantage of this meaningful opportunity as many organizations will not be allowing volunteers in their buildings in these uncertain times.
